Snow Moon
Does anyone know the pronunciation for the Native American(cherokee I believe) word VSKIHYI?
I may be getting yet another horse.. She’s a beautiful cremello.. and I want to name her either Miakoda[power of the moon] or Vskihyi [snow moon]…. But I’m not sure how to say Vskihyi.
Any other names relating to moon(along with phonetics please) would be greatly appreciated! But I do love those two names..
Thanks in advance!
Vskihyi indeed does mean “snowmoon” in Cherokee and it is also the word for “December” on the Cherokee calendar.
The pronunciation is uh sss gee yee with a strong stress on the ‘s’ according to the website below. You can verify it by entering “December” into the search box.

According to most pronunciation guides I’ve seen and heard on tape, ‘v’ in Cherokee has the sound of ‘u’ in English “but” and “cut” but is a little more nasal. The “uh” in English “Uh-huh” for “yes” when somone nods their head comes very close to the Cherokee sound.
S v no yi a ga li s gv is a Cherokee word that means “Moonlight” (Suh-no-yee-ah-gah-lees-guh). Don’t be surprised that it’s long and takes time to say. I read that the Cherokee language was traditionally spoken slowly. It is not a language with a fast-paced tempo like English sometimes or Spanish.
